is surfing at the age of 15 or 16 too old?
I am a girl, im fifteen and have been bodyboarding since i was 8. I was out bodyboarding last month while at the beach when I suddenly wanted to do more then just bodyboard, next step.. surfing. I asked my parents about the beautiful sport, my dad supports me and my mom doesnt. I live a hour or 2 away from the beach & i visit orange county sometimes since its been home since i was 3. I can only go to the beach like 7 times a year but, im getting older and i can be able to drive myself there soon whenever im free. I want to earn my own money & pay for lessons, my own surfboard, etc. Itd be nice if you can tell me your stories on how you started out surfing
I live two hours away from the beach now, but when I was your age, I spent all my summers at a shore resort, two blocks from the beach. I started surfing at 14, which was around the age most of my pals did. The old guys didn’t want us surfing. We spent years learning the ocean and how to body surf and body board, before we ever started to surf. We learned on our own, there was no such things as lessons back then in 1966. Sometimes some the older guys would give us tips.
Lessons are the best way to start. Lessons can come from a professional instructor, or surfing family members or experienced surfing friends. You have to learn surf etiquette (so the experienced surfers in the line up don’t want to drown you), how to paddle and take off on a wave, and how to ride a wave. The last thing experienced surfers want is for inexperienced people to just grab a board, rush into the surf and get in our way. Lessons shorten the learning curve significantly. And they help keep ignorant, un-prepared kooks out of the water and out of the way of more experienced surfers. Lessons can also come from friends or family members who surf.
Almost ALL instructors will start you off on a longboard. It is just too difficult for most people to leran how to surf on a short board. Most get quickly discouraged, and just quit. Now, over the years, I have seen some young surfers start out on short boards and master them in time. But it’s just common sense to learn on a long board.
And DON”T rush into buying a board. Beginners should take advantage of renting boards and wetsuits while taking lessons. If it turns out you don’t like surfing, you haven’t wasted a whole lot of money on gear that you are not going to use. When you are ready to buy, don’t waste your time on line, go to a good local surf shop to discuss your size (weight is import, height isn’t), skill level and local wave conditions. And if possible, avoid popouts, and boards made in sweat shops in China, unless that’s just all you can afford. And don’t forget, there are always used boards for sale in every surf shop. After almost 43 years of surfing, I still get my surfboard buying advice at good local shops in the places where I surf.
You are a perfect age to start surfing. You are a little more mature and probably much more familiar and comfortable with the ocean than lots of younger kids, who may be starting too young (or too un prepared). My grandchildren are starting to surf, but they are starting gradually, swimming, boogie boarding and just having fun in the ocean first. Right now, my 7 year old grandson is the best, but they are all coming along (ages 6 thru 10).
You sound pretty smart and I like your attitude. I worked for every surfboard I ever owned. I nought them with money that I EARNED, and that makes them special. My first board was a $50. popout I bought in a sporting goods store. I have “upgraded” since then. When you start to drive, you’ll be able to get to the beach a lot more. And, if you work hard, behave yourself (most of the time) your Mom will come around. Surfing is a good healthy, wholesome activity, inspite of the negative steretype attached to some surfers.
