Surfing Money Parents?!?

I am thirteen years old and have been riding a 7′6 costco board and I have really wanted a new surfboard. The problem is my family is trying to buy a house that is super expensive. My dad is always telling me that it is a lot of money even though it is a fraction compared to the house we might get. Also, he keeps telling me all the dangers of shortboards which I already understand to try to pursade me. On the other hand, my mom is totally up for it. They say they will get me one for Christmas. I have been waiting for like 4 monthes to get one and I have been getting so anxious. I am 5′5 or so and I am 137 lbs. Would you say a 6′4 would be good? The brand I have been wanting is a plus one surfboard. Search it up and if you see a model that you think would be a good first shortboard tell me. Thanks guys. Sorry it is so long!

Hi Cole,

Everyone will have a different opinion on this one and you have some good pieces of advice already.

Have you considered a big fish? If you’re really determined to get on a shortboard, then this is a great alternative. The flat, wide bottom will provide you with loads of paddling power, stability and speed. Everyone should have a fish in their quiver.

You will struggle moving down to a shorter board, so just expect it. You need to catch the wave later and the board will feel very unstable at first. I am about 20 pounds heavier and my first shortboard was a 6′8″. The Vario would be a good board for you, but definitely go big. 6′4″ might be good.

If you’re feeling adventurous, you might also want to try our surfboard match. Let us know how you like your new board!
